In 1880, the Czech musician Josef Fischer arrived in Ruse with his family and opened a restaurant called Fischer in the then Golyam Varoš neighborhood.
A string orchestra often played in the brewery and various celebrations were organized, which was the reason for the indignation of the people living in the area. After moving to Hospitalna Street, the building was bought by Sofia residents and converted into a cinema.
The story goes that Sofia entrepreneurs wanted to partner with the Modern Theater cinema, but its founders, the Tsankovi brothers, refused. Thus, in 1912, the Josef Fischer building was purchased to house the city's second Apollo cinema. The films in it came directly from Sofia, where the entrepreneurs had another cinema.
Until 2009, the building existed as a cinema, although it underwent structural alterations and changes of ownership. The cinemas housed in it were named "Maxim Gorky" and "Royal", the latter being the name by which the people of Ruse recognize the building today.
In 2009 the building acquired its modern look, as the old building was demolished and in its place was erected the current shopping complex "Royal".
